Already providing its primarily business customers with wireless phone service, two-way radio dispatch, paging, and text messaging on one handset, Nextel has added multinational service, wireless Internet access, and international roaming. The company has used specialized mobile radio (SMR) spectrum to build its position as a leading wireless operator in the US, where it has more than 16 million subscribers (including its Boost Mobile unit) and competes against the likes of Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Sprint PCS, and T-Mobile USA. It has agreed to be acquired by Sprint Corp.
