California Sculptor Bruce Beasley Among Artists Chosen for Special Commission

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Seven American artists have been chosen by the China Sculpture Institute to install their work in the Beijing Sculpture Park, in honor of the Olympic Games. Included among the sculptors is Bruce Beasley, whose ``Gathering of the Moons'' stands 17 feet tall and is displayed near Beijing's famed ``Bird's Nest'' Olympic stadium.

Invited artists include Bruce Beasley, Charles Jencks, Dennis Oppenheim, Elyn Zimmerman, Jonathan Borofsky, Mary Miss, and Wen-ying Tsai. Artists were asked to provide their own meaning of the Olympic Games, a request that resulted in a wide variety of interpretations.

Artists were invited by a committee who sought out the finest sculptors worldwide to complete the project. The sculptures will be on public display during the games and will remain as part of a permanent collection of outdoor sculpture in the Beijing Sculpture Park.

``It is an honor to receive this commission, and I am thrilled that my work will be displayed for such a large international audience,'' says Bruce Beasley, the only California artist chosen for the commissions. ``It is my hope that these works of art will represent the need for diplomacy and understanding among all countries that participate in the Olympic Games.''
