The company operates through three segments: Avista Utilities, Energy Marketing and Resource Management, and Advantage IQ. The Avista Utilities segment engages in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric energy, primarily from hydroelectric and thermal sources. This segment also distributes natural gas to retail customers, as well as engages in wholesale purchase and sale of energy commodities. As of December 31, 2007, the company had a total net capability of 1,771 megawatt. It provided retail electric service to approximately 352,000 customers; and retail natural gas service to approximately 311,000 customers. The Energy Marketing and Resource Management segment engages in electricity and natural gas marketing, trading, and resource management, including optimization of energy assets owned by other entities and derivative commodity instruments, such as futures, options, swaps, and other contractual arrangements. The Advantage IQ segment provides facility information and cost management services for multi-site customers. This segment’s primary product lines include consolidated billing, resource accounting, energy analysis, and load profiling services. In addition, Avista’s other investments and operations include sheet metal fabrication of electronic enclosures, parts, and systems for the computer, telecom, and medical industries; real estate investments, primarily commercial office buildings; and investments in venture capital funds and low income housing. The company was founded in 1889 and is headquartered in Spokane, Washington. |
