Thursday October 30, 2008 6:00 am ET

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 30, 2008 -- Editors Note: A video is included with this press release.

Business meetings in an ultra-realistic 3D virtual world. An application that tells you when someone you want to reach is available and rings them up automatically. Optical networks 10 times faster than today's networks. These are just some of the latest innovations Nortel(1) (Toronto:NT.TO - News)(NYSE:NT - News) is demonstrating to customers at its annual Advanced Technology Summit (ATS) from October 14 to November 7 in Ottawa.

Nortel is showing off solutions that will help its customers meet the challenges and reap the rewards of the era of Hyperconnectivity where more devices and applications are connected to the network. By the time ATS is complete, Nortel will have delivered over 400 private technology demonstrations to over 200 customers from more than 50 different companies.

Metro Ethernet Networks

There are more than 18 different Metro Ethernet Network application and infrastructure demonstrations, including:

- 40G/100G optical solutions from Nortel's Metro Ethernet Networks portfolio that can carry enough high-speed traffic to beat the bandwidth glut that looms because our growing obsession with HD and streaming video (click here to check out how one customer is embracing 40G).

- WDM PON based Ethernet Access solutions that deliver more bandwidth right to the end-user's front door, clearing up the first mile bottleneck and supporting the delivery of services like IPTV and video-conferencing (click here to check out how Nortel shows off this technology on the tradeshow circuit).

Solving Business Problems

Nortel's strength in delivering applications that help solve business problems and improve the communications experience in the era of Hyperconnectivity is showcased through a series of demonstrations such as:

- Healthcare solutions that combine location and presence information with telecom to improve patient care and make hospitals and clinicians more efficient (click here to see a video demo).

- Web 2.0 solutions such as web.alive that allow people to collaborate and conduct business in a 3D audio-visual virtual world (for more on web.alive check out this interview with chief architect, Arn Hyndman).

- Next Generation Video/IPTV solutions that bring interactivity to watching television. Check out some examples of Nortel's IPTV capabilities: blended communications demo, "video to go" demo.

Emerging Technologies

New and emerging technologies born out of Nortel's open innovation laboratory are also on display:

- Rendezvous application that uses the network to find the person you need to speak to and connect you when it's convenient for both, so nobody wastes time playing phone tag.

- Video Social Network capabilities that allow you to build your TV playlist online, share your preferences with friends or get their picks on what to watch, then have it transfer directly to your set-top box.

- Web services such as Delivery Alert, an application that tracks deliveries online and sends an alert when they are almost at your door (sounds better than the usual "we'll be there between 9 and 5" timeframe right?). These are based on Nortel's Agile Communications Environment which uses Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) technology to allow operators to easily and quickly deploy new applications.

Customers are also checking out Nortel's 4G wireless technology that delivers the mobile bandwidth needed to make connecting on the go as fast and reliable as connecting to a wireline network (4G drive tests: WiMAX, LTE).

Nortel CTO John Roese Says:

"In today's global economy, companies must view innovation as both a strategic challenge and an imperative to success. This is the drum that Nortel marches to and it's why we have shifted more of our R&D investments into growth areas and next-generation technologies. Nortel continues to be known for its technology innovation, outstanding quality, and operational excellence and that's exactly what customers are seeing at ATS."
