First 50 applications at launch will be available to download for free

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 23, 2008 -- Editors Note: Photos are included with this press release.

T-Mobile today unveils the first applications that will be available to download to the T-Mobile G1 when it launches in the UK on 30 October. An initial shortlist of 50 applications will be downloadable for free from Android Market and promise to do everything from teaching you to play the guitar, mix the perfect cocktail and even measure the earth's movements.

Exclusive to T-Mobile, the G1 is the first device to run on Android, the innovative open source mobile phone software platform from Google. Android Market, the forum for applications created by developers around the world, is anticipated to host thousands of unique applications plus mash-ups of existing services.

The applications enable users to tailor their phone to suit their lifestyle and are designed to make the most of the T-Mobile G1's advanced features including always-on, high speed web connectivity; touch-screen and full qwerty keyboard, GPS and accelerometer which can measure movement of the device and a unique compass.

One application to take advantage of the T-Mobile G1's camera and GPS functionality is Wikitude, which displays local information from Wikipedia live on-screen when scanning your local surroundings using the device's camera.

There are also a number of applications designed to help consumers make their money go further. ShopSavvy, uses the G1's camera to 'scan' product barcodes and then searches the web using the browser to find the best available prices. The application also features product reviews and ratings, lets you create shopping lists, connects you to shops selling the product and gives directions to the nearest retailer using Google Maps.

Other applications help users indulge their interests. SplashPlay teaches users how to play the guitar by streaming video over the web, whilst Cooking Capsules and Cocktail! comb the web to provide recipes and instructions based on the contents of your kitchen or drinks cabinet.

If that wasn't enough, owners of the T-Mobile G1 can download their own seismographer which uses the phone's accelerometer to measure the earth's movements.

Available via the T-Mobile G1's main menu, Android Market includes user ratings, reviews and comments which enables users to identify the most popular applications. The initial 50 free applications are designed to show the potential of the Android Market. The price of future applications will be set by application developers.

Jim Hyde, CEO, T-Mobile UK said: "T-Mobile is committed to opening up the internet to give customers the freedom to do whatever they want online, when the internet has no boundaries it drives innovation and the T-Mobile G1 and the Android platform is designed to do just that. The open nature of Android Market has already sparked an exciting range of applications which allow customers to tailor their phone to suit their lifestyle. We're really excited to be able to offer the first 50 applications free of charge and believe the T-Mobile G1 has the potential to revolutionise the way we use and view our phones."
