Customers to Have Access to Inmarsat's Small, Lightweight, Portable BGAN Satellite Terminals and Stay Connected Anywhere in the World

EDMONTON, AB--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 17, 2008 -- Edmonton-based satellite telecommunications company, Virgin Technologies Inc., today announced that it has been granted an Industry Canada license to offer Inmarsat's BGAN mobile satellite service to individuals, organizations and government agencies across Canada. Inmarsat's BGAN service is newly available to the Canadian marketplace. Virgin Technologies is now one of only two licensed BGAN providers in Canada.

Virgin Technologies specializes in innovative satellite telecommunications solutions, typically used in VoIP telephone and fax services, secure VPN over satellite, remote site monitoring and data reporting, and secure mission critical communications. BGAN is an exciting new product and service offering for our "on the move" customers, including military, emergency responders, exploration and construction, professionals, disaster recovery and news gathering agencies. Inmarsat's BGAN not only provides broadband data and voice services, but it provides the services via portable, lightweight satellite terminals -- some smaller than a laptop and weighing less than 1kg.

Virgin Technologies' President & CEO, Robert Smibert, said the BGAN license is an exciting move forward, in terms of market potential and being able to now offer such portable, mobile connectivity to the Company's existing and future customers. "Canadians have been waiting for a portable, lightweight telecommunication solution that can keep them connected anywhere they go on the planet, facilitate multiple users, and enable them to transmit and receive streaming video, voice, or other bandwidth-intensive data," Smibert said. "Obtaining our Industry Canada license enables us to offer this new BGAN service directly to Canadians. We look forward to helping mobile professionals, emergency responders, the military and other organizations operate more efficiently and communicate with their roaming personnel more effectively."

BGAN is ideal for use in remote areas of the world where wireless, terrestrial, cable or other broadband telecommunication service is unavailable. The various portable terminals, which range from terminals weighing less than 1kg to vehicle-mounted terminals, are widely used around the world. The satellite terminals can facilitate multiple users and wireless access. BGAN offers on-demand standard IP at up to 492kbps, guaranteed data rates of up to 256kbps with streaming IP service, voice, ISDN and SMS services. Inmarsat has recently announced plans to introduce a new guaranteed IP data rate that will deliver a minimum data speed of 384kbps, which will be available on existing terminals by mid-2009.
