OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Aug 14, 2008 -- "If you have developed and demonstrated new cellulosic ethanol or next-generation biodiesel technology, we want to hear from you." This is the word coming today from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), as it calls for applications to its $500-million NextGen Biofuels Fund(TM), which supports the establishment of first-of-kind large demonstration-scale facilities for the production of next-generation renewable fuels.

"The future of biofuels lies in cellulosic ethanol and next-generation biodiesel, produced from non-food feedstocks that do not encourage land-use changes," says Vicky J. Sharpe, President and CEO of SDTC. "The projects that SDTC wants to support under its NextGen Biofuels Fund(TM) will bring cellulosic ethanol and next-generation biodiesel one step closer to market and help secure Canada's position as a world leader in the renewable fuels industry."

The NextGen Biofuels Fund(TM) will support up to 40% of eligible project costs. The contribution will be repayable based on free cash flow over a period of 10 years after project completion.

The fund is open for applications all year-round. To be eligible, a project must:

- be a First-of-Kind facility that primarily produces a next-generation renewable fuel at large demonstration-scale;

- be located in Canada;

- use feedstocks that are or could be representative of Canadian biomass; and

- have demonstrated its technology at pre-commercial scale.

Next-generation biofuels are derived from non-traditional renewable feedstocks, such as municipal waste, agricultural and forest residues, and perennial crops on marginal land, and are produced through the use of novel conversion technologies.

Prior to submitting an Application for Funding (AFF), candidates should communicate their intent to SDTC by sending an email to nextgenapplications@sdtc.ca.

The NextGen Biofuels Fund(TM) was announced by the Government of Canada in Budget 2007 and launched by SDTC on September 12, 2007.
