What exactly is a Goji berry? Also known as the Chinese wolfberry and Duke of Argyll's tea tree, the Goji berry is cultivated primarily in China and is in the same family as the potato, tomato, eggplant, and chili pepper. However, unlike its relatives, the Goji berry is packed with vital nutrients. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for about 2,000 years and is used to improve eyesight, protect the liver, and boost both the circulatory and immune systems. In the U.S., as in Asia, it is also one of the most popular up and coming anti-aging supplements.

The current research, a double-blind placebo controlled study, monitored general feelings of well-being, neurologic/psychologic traits, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular complaints in 35 adults. After two weeks of supplementing their diet with Goji juice, 80% of the participants slept better and about 50% said they were less tired, had more energy, felt healthier and happier and enjoyed increased athletic and sexual performance. Some women also reported a reduction in menstrual pain.

Among the Goji berry's long list of nutrients are 19 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, essential fatty acids, vitamin B and a host of other substances that have anti-flammatory, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties and do everything from regulating the blood pressure, guarding against prostate enlargement and reducing cholesterol to enhancing memory and promoting muscle growth. Although each of these is a vital component of anti-aging supplements, perhaps the most important is the Goji berry's antioxidant content. Goji berries are the richest food source of antioxidant carotenoids, have more vitamin C than oranges, and even contain vitamin E -- very rare for a fruit.
