Sexual Health May Be the Least of Men's Problems as They Get Older

FeelGoodforLife.com -- Men's Health, Both Physical and Emotional, Affected by Male Menopause

PASADENA, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Jun 4, 2008 -- Although men expect their testosterone levels to decrease, along with sexual health and desire as they get older, male menopause affects more than the desire for sex: It can also result in a loss of drive and general interest in life. Despite this, the vast majority of men do not seek testosterone treatment, according to a recent study. Some experts feel that men may not realize the condition is treatable or may consider treatment to be dangerous. However, there are vitamins and minerals that can improve men's health overall, including sexual health and general drive.

Male menopause, also known as andropause or androgen deficiency, begins at middle age when testosterone levels start falling. Most men are aware of changes in their sexual health -- erectile dysfunction, loss of desire, and so on -- but there are several other physical and emotional conditions they may not realize are part of the same problem.

Men with sexual health problems may also experience reduced physical strength or endurance, lack of energy, feeling sad or becoming one of those 'grumpy old men,' and may notice a deterioration in work performance. They may also find that their enjoyment in life is on the wane.

Nevertheless, a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine discovered that of 1,486 men tested for testosterone deficiency, only 12 percent were receiving testosterone treatment. Researchers said they do not know why some men get treatment and others don't, but they do know the men have access to care.

It's possible that many do not know these conditions can be treated, but some men may feel that testosterone treatment won't work or could be dangerous. A 2007 Mayo Clinic review of the science of testosterone treatment found little evidence of its effectiveness, but said there is no proof testosterone treatment is safe for the cardiovascular system. It can also have a myriad of side effects that include everything from baldness to acne, and may even promote prostate cancer.

Many experts in men's health, including the problems men face with sexual health as they get older, recommend vitamin and mineral supplements to address the problem. Men who want to enjoy life as they get older may want to consider these remedies.
