Universal Detection Technology Is a Supplier of Rapid Ricin Detection Kits

LOS ANGELES, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 29, 2008 -- Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTC BB:UDTT.OB - News) (Frankfurt:PO8.F - News), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies to protect people from bioterrorism and other infectious health threats and provider of counter-terrorism consulting and training services, issued an analysis of the recent ricin incident in Las Vegas. Police in Las Vegas said a man is in critical condition after being found unconscious in a motel room with a powder suspected of being the poison ricin.

Police have cordoned off the area and isolated the room where the substance was found and three motel employees and another person were quarantined and decontaminated at the site, then taken to hospitals for further testing, authorities said. Three police officers who had been exposed were also taken to hospitals. However, the man believed to be living in the room with the toxin is in critical condition.

Ricin is a toxin that can be made from the waste left over from processing castor beans. It is one of the most toxic and easily produced plant toxins. If injected, as little as 500 micrograms of ricin could be enough to kill an adult; some animal research indicates that similar amounts could be lethal, if inhaled. Ricin has been used in the past as a bioterrorist weapon and remains a serious threat.

"The Las Vegas incident is of serious concern as ricin is one of the most toxic substances known to man. A small amount of ricin, the size the head of a pin is enough to kill a man," said Mr. Amir Ettehadieh, UDTT's Director of Research and Development. "Our detection kits are designed to detect for the presence of ricin toxin in less than 15 minutes," he added.
