If Verenium has anything to say about it, kids on Halloween aren't going to be the only ones experiencing a sugar rush. The company is developing cellulosic ethanol, an alternative fuel made from the leftover stalks and leaves of sugarcane and grasses. Created from the 2007 merger of enzyme manufacturer Diversa and ethanol producer Celunol, the company operates a pilot plant for producing cellulosic ethanol in Louisiana and is constructing a demonstration-scale facility. Verenium also develops specialty enzyme products used to convert biomass into fuel, make industrial processing more efficient, and develop healthier feedstocks for animals and therapeutic proteins for humans.
