Like a Zen master of the drugmaking world, Vasogen strives to have a calming influence, at least on inflammatory responses associated with cardiovascular and neurological disease. The company is focused on a set of early-stage compounds that may treat some neurological diseases (such as Parkinson's disease) by targeting inflammation. Its lead candidate had been the Celacade system, a technology that treats chronic heart failure using patients' own blood; however, in 2008 the company put Celacade development on hold following a setback with the FDA. Vasogen then restructured and slashed its workforce, and in mid-2009 it announced plans to merge with private drug developer IntelliPharmaCeutics.
