Modern Continental Companies (MCC) is a modern concern with Old World values. Its Modern Continental Construction is a heavy construction leader in New England, focusing on highways, mass transit systems, and other infrastructure projects. Other operations include Spearin, Preston, & Burrows, a marine construction firm. Modern Continental Companies has been embroiled in safety issues stemming from a motorist's death in Boston's Central Artery tunnel, or Big Dig. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008 after federal prosecutors charged the firm with 49 criminal counts regarding overbilling and safety issues in the tunnel. If convicted MCC faces paying millions in fines and restitution.
