Brazil's Bompreço S.A. Supermercados do Nordeste has become part of the global retail empire of Wal-Mart Stores, which bought the 118-store chain from Royal Ahold in 2004. (The troubled Dutch retailer acquired Bompreço in 1996. Royal Ahold also sold Bompreço's Hipercard credit card business, which has more than two million card holders, to Unibanco.) Founded in 1935, Bompreço is the leading retailer in northeastern Brazil with more than 85 supermarkets and about 28 hypermarkets (Hiper Bompreço), which sell clothing and electronics in eight states there. The retailer also operates mini-markets, Balaio discount stores, Farmacia Bompreço, and a few Hiper Magazine stores.
