Peso-pinching shoppers in Mexico can't miss Organización Soriana's huge stores. Founded in 1968, the company is Mexico's second-largest retailer based on sales (behind Wal-Mart de México), with about 455 hypermarkets (huge stores that sell both food and general merchandise) and supermarkets in 120-plus Mexican cities and now the US. Its stores have been located primarily in northern Mexico, but Soriana has been adding stores in central and southern Mexico as well. In 2007 the grocer acquired about 200 stores in Mexico from its smaller rival Grupo Gigante for about $1.35 billion. The families of cousins CEO Ricardo Martín Bringas and director Alberto Martín Soberón own most of the company and help run it.
