One of Brazil's largest nonfood retailers, Lojas Americanas operates about 400 discount department stores offering apparel, household and beauty products, CDs, toys, and chocolates and candies in 19 states. The Brazilian retailer also has a strong online presence through its three Web sites (Americanas.com, Shoptime, and Submarino) and on television. The company also operates the Blockbuster video store franchise in Brazil after acquiring the license in 2007. Its financial services subsidiary, FAI, offers personal loans and credit cards to shoppers in its stores. Founded in 1929 by Jim Marshall, an American, Lojas Americanas began as a single discount store in Rio de Janeiro.
