American shoppers know the Tengelmann Group best through its majority-owned A&P (Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company) supermarkets. But the 445-odd A&P stores are only a tiny part of Tengelmann, one of Europe's leading food retailers (along with German rivals ALDI Group, METRO AG, and REWE-Zentral). The company operates more than 7,400 supermarkets, drugstores, and general merchandise stores in 15 European countries under such names as Tengelmann and Kaiser's (supermarkets and drugstores) in Germany, Obi (do-it-yourself supply stores), Plus (a discount food chain), and KiK (apparel and general merchandise stores). The sons of chairman and former CEO Erivan Haub now run the company.
