Unione di Banche Italiane (formerly Banche Popolari Unite or BPU) combines several banks under one organization. Known as UBI Banca, it serves individuals and businesses through nine subsidiary banks with some 2,000 branches in Italy (concentrated in the Lombardy region) and offices in 11 other countries in Europe, Asia, and South America. The bank offers such standard deposit products as savings and checking accounts and CDs. It also provides asset management, leasing operations, private banking, insurance, corporate banking, and mortgage and other types of lending. In the consolidating Italian banking market, BPU bought rival Banca Lombarda e Piemontese for nearly $8 billion in 2007 and changed its name.
