Give credit where credit is due: UniCredit is a giant among Europe's banking giants. Also known as UniCredito Italiano, the company and its units have some 10,000 financial services branches in more than 50 countries. UniCredit's retail banking operations are led by its HVB in Germany, Bank Austria (that country's top bank), and UniCredit Banca in Italy. The company's $18 billion acquisition of HVB and Bank Austria in 2005 was one of the largest cross-border banking deals seen in Europe, while the nearly $30 billion purchase of Italian bank Capitalia in 2007 strengthened its hold at home. UniCredit also has corporate banking, asset management, investment banking, private banking, and related businesses.
