SPAR Handelsgesellschaft takes a bite out of Germany's grocery market. Its 2,500 SPAR supermarkets and some 2,900 Netto Marken-Discount stores are the focus of the group. It also operates convenience stores under the SPAR Express name. In order to focus on its grocery units, the company has cast off most nonfood operations such as KODI discount stores, outlets at gas stations, and its Einkauf 24 online shopping division. Known also as SPAR Handels, its wholesale business supplies goods to thousands of independent retailers in Germany. Former rival Edeka Zentrale, Germany's largest grocery retailer, owns the company.
