French industrial giant SAFRAN could argue that communication isn't always the key to a happy marriage, especially if one side insists on being defensive. The company -- spawned by the 2005 merger of communications equipment maker Sagem and aircraft engine manufacturer Snecma -- sold its broadband and mobile communications businesses in 2008. The company is returning to its aerospace roots while building up its defense and security operations. Its main business segments now include Aerospace Propulsion (aircraft engines, missile systems), Aircraft Equipment (landing gear and brakes), and Defense Security (unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, identification systems, and airport screening equipment).
