QLT's drugs respond to a light touch. The company develops pharmaceuticals that are activated when exposed to light. Visudyne, developed and marketed with Novartis Ophthalmic, fights a type of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness. The drug is approved in more than 80 countries and accounts for about 40% of QLT's sales. The company hopes to expand Visudyne's indications for other types of AMD. The company's other main product, Eligard, is used for the treatment of benign prostate cancer. QLT is also developing topically applied drugs in the fields of ophthalmology (for glaucoma) and dermatology (for acne).
