QLT's drugs respond to a light touch. The company develops pharmaceuticals that are activated when exposed to light. Its main product Visudyne, developed and marketed with Novartis' ophthalmic division, fights a type of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness. Visudyne is administered through a two-stage intravenous and laser treatment process. The drug is approved in more than 80 countries. The company hopes to expand Visudyne's indications for other types of AMD. QLT is also developing additional ophthalmology therapies for ailments including glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
