When it comes to mining, Norilsk Nickel is a real Russian bear. By its own estimate, the company is the world's largest producer of nickel (5.8 million tons of reserves) and palladium (61 million ounces), and it has a sizable stake in cobalt and platinum production worldwide. Its properties are located in Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America (through a majority stake in platinum producer Stillwater Mining). Though its mining and metals business accounts for more than three-quarters of its sales, Norilsk Nickel's operations also include energy supply (mostly for the company itself) and transportation and logistics. Investor Vladimir Potanin and Russian aluminum giant RUSAL each owns 25% of the company.
