Can Hemosol bankrupt blood banks, or will developing a blood substitute break its bank? The biopharmaceutical company is developing Hemolink, a hemoglobin replacement used to treat acute anemia caused by chemotherapy or surgery. Hemolink, which is made by purifying, then modifying human red blood cells, obviates the need for donor red blood cell transfusions. After conducting clinical trials for the product for cardiac procedures, the company put Hemolink on hold pending further evaluations. Hemosol is also developing other drugs, including a blood-based treatment for hepatitis C and liver cancer, as well as an anti-oxidant to prevent tissue damage due to reperfusion.
