"Rampart! Rampart! This is Squad 51." Remember that line from 70s TV? Well, Rampart Capital is answering a different kind of distress call, flipping open its own "trauma box" to help real estate casualties. At deep discounts, Rampart buys such assets as portfolios of nonperforming loans, commercial debt, and mortgages on distressed real estate. It then gleans value from them by collecting the debt, selling or holding the real estate, and otherwise managing its portfolio. Rampart also provides bridge funding for real estate properties it owns and sells to developers. The company buys distressed assets from banks, government agencies such as the FDIC, and bankruptcy estates. Rampart Capital went private in 2003.
