Telemig Celular Participações, the holding company for operating subsidiary Telemig Celular S.A., is one of the companies that resulted from the 1998 breakup of Brazil's Telebrás phone monopoly. Telemig Celular is the leading provider of mobile phone service in the state of Minas Gerais. The company has both prepaid and contract customers among its users, and it also offers wireless Internet access. Rival Vivo acquired the company in 2008 as part of a $640 million deal that also included Tele Norte Celular.
