Brasil Telecom keeps phones ringing all over Brazil. Through its publicly traded operating subsidiary Brasil Telecom SA, the company provides services including fixed-line local, intraregional long-distance, data communication, and wireless service. The company is one of several fixed-line operators that broke out when the Telebrás telecommunications monopoly was broken up and privatized in 1998. Top Brazilian carrier Tele Norte Leste Participações (known as Oi) bought about 79% of Brasil Telecom in two 2009 transaction totalling about $4.8 billion. The combined company offers fixed line service across Brazil and controls more than 15% of the country's growing mobile market.
