JAPEX is at the apex of Japan's oil and gas industry. Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) explores for and produces oil and gas in Japan and around the world. The Japanese government controls about half of JAPEX since the virtually bankrupt Japan National Oil Corporation was abolished in 2005. The company's exploration and production division sells crude oil, natural gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Another division contracts for drilling projects and geological and geophysical surveys. Other operations include the sale of petroleum products such as LPG and fuel oil. In 2009 JAPEX agreed to buy the oil product sales unit of a Mitsubishi Materials subsidiary.
