Independent films are the cat's meow at Lions Gate Entertainment. The firm, which operates as Lionsgate, is the leading producer and distributor of independent films -- such as Academy Award winner Crash and top documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 -- through its Lionsgate Films division. It produces TV programming ("Fear Itself") through Lionsgate Television. Lionsgate also releases films under the Trimark brand and owns a library of more than 8,000 movie titles. In addition, it owns a minority stake in CinemaNow, an online video-on-demand service, and production studio Roadside Attractions. Lionsgate's 2003 purchase of rival Artisan Entertainment for $160 million created the industry's largest indie studio.
