One of the mightiest on the mighty Mississippi, barge operator American Commercial Lines (ACL) navigates the inland waterways of the US. ACL is a leading barge transporter of dry bulk commodities, including alumina, cement, fertilizers, and salt, as well as coal, grain, and steel. The company also transports liquid bulk cargo such as chemicals, ethanol, and petroleum products. ACL's fleet consists of about 1,870 covered dry cargo barges, 380 open dry cargo barges, and 390 tank barges, powered by about 150 towboats. In addition to transportation, the company engages in manufacturing: Its Jeffboat subsidiary builds barges for ACL and other customers.
