Ritz Camera Centers began as a one-man portrait studio in 1918 and grew to become the largest photographic chain in the US with some 800 stores in 40-plus states. Today Ritz's 375 stores offer one-hour photofinishing, cameras, film, and photographic and optical products and services. Stores operate under names such as Ritz Camera, Wolf Camera, Kits Camera, Inkley's, and The Camera Shop; the company also sells online. Stung by declining sales in its photofinishing business (due to the shift to digital cameras) and rising oil prices, which hurt sales at its Boaters World subisidiary, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February 2009.
