Homeowners and businesses in 40 states pledge allegiance to Republic Services and the trash collection for which it stands. In 2008, the once #3 industry player acquired #2 company Allied Waste for $6 billion to place it closer to industry leader Waste Management in terms of revenues and geographic coverage. The enlarged company provides waste disposal services for commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential customers through its network of 427 collection companies. Republic Services owns or operates some 219 solid waste landfills, 255 transfer stations, and 86 recycling centers. In 2008 Republic Services rebuffed a Waste Management takeover bid.
