Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) hopes to Shanghai as much of the Chinese automobile market as possible. The government-owned company is one of China's largest automotive firms, with about 50 plants in the Shanghai area. SAIC makes passenger cars, tractors, motorcycles, trucks, and buses. The company's joint venture with General Motors, Shanghai General Motors, makes Buicks for the Chinese market. Through Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company, a joint venture with Volkswagen, SAIC also makes the Santana. The company's other operations include car leasing, auto parts wholesale and retail, and financing.
