If you think security through holograms is a concept limited to science fiction, you haven't heard of American Bank Note Holographics (ABNH). The company makes holograms (3-D reproductions of an image made on a 2-D surface), mainly for security and authentication purposes. Other security applications for holograms include identification and transaction (credit and debit) cards; documents of value, such as bank notes and gift checks; and product authentication and packaging. Customers include MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club, retailers such as Nordstrom and Sears, and the US government. The firm was acquired in 2008 by JDS Uniphase for about $138 million.
