GenVec is all over the medical map. The clinical-stage biopharmaceutical firm develops gene-based drugs and vaccines for everything from cancer to HIV. Its lead candidate, TNFerade, may boost the effectiveness of chemotherapy used to treat pancreatic and other types of cancer. Another drug candidate, AdPEDF, is in early clinical testing to treat age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness. GenVec is also developing multiple vaccines for contagious diseases, such as HIV, malaria, and foot-and-mouth, through grants from and collaborations with several federal agencies: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, US Department of Homeland Security, and US Department of Agriculture.
