Hungry Canadians know the way to Canada Safeway, a leading retail supermarket chain in western Canada. It has about 220 stores -- located primarily in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan -- and about 25% of the grocery market in western Canada. Most of the stores have pharmacies. Parent company Safeway is one of the leading supermarket operators in the US. Canada Safeway serves independent grocery stores and institutional customers through four distribution centers (operated by third parties); it also has about a dozen Canadian plants that make or process meat, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, bread, and other foods. Canada Safeway was established in 1929 in Winnipeg.
