No collateral damage here. Collateral Therapeutics, a subsidiary of Schering AG, develops gene therapies to treat various cardiovascular diseases as an alternative to such invasive therapies as coronary bypass surgery and angioplasty. The biotechnology company's drug candidates promote angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, as a means of fighting coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, congestive heart failure, and heart attacks. Fellow Schering subsidiary Berlex Laboratories is conducting clinical trials for the firm's drug candidates. Collateral Therapeutics has licensed technology from the University of California and New York University, among others.
