If you've got a bug (of the bacterial variety), Shionogi & Co. will kill it. The Japanese drug firm is a leading maker of antibiotics in its home country, with a full lineup of oral and injectable anti-infectives. It has been expanding its pipeline and its portfolio of marketed products to encompass other therapeutic areas as well, with programs in metabolic conditions, cancer, pain, and cardiovascular disease. Through partnerships with large global firms, it owns Japanese market rights to some big name drugs, including AstraZeneca's blood pressure drug Crestor (which Shionogi helped develop); Purdue Pharma's pain therapy OxyContin; and Schering-Plough allergy medication Claritin.
