Founded in 1914 as Nichiro Fishery Company, Nichiro has pulled up its lines and is now more interested in fish sticks than fishing. The company, which operates through about 30 subsidiaries, is Japan's #3 seafood producer, after Maruha and Nippon Suisan Kaisha. Canned and frozen foods account for about 60% of sales. Beyond seafood, the company emphasizes frozen convenience foods. Other business lines include livestock feed, furs, hotel operations, and packaging machinery. Nichiro has expanded exports to China and the US. Its US subsidiaries make canned salmon and surimi, a crab-flavored fish.
