While most Yankees are good at warming their homes, the ones at The Yankee Candle Company are also good at making their homes smell like Egyptian Cotton or Home Sweet Home. It makes and sells candles, known for their burning longevity and strong smells -- in more than 150 fragrances. It also sells candleholders, accessories, and dinnerware. Yankee Candle's products are sold by about 17,500 gift shops nationwide, as well as internationally in about 20 countries. Yankee Candle operates about 420 stores in 43 states, mostly in malls, and sells online and through catalogs. Madison Dearborn Partners acquired Yankee Candle in 2007 for $1.6 billion. A new CEO took over in October 2009.
