Here comes XenoMouse to save the day! Abgenix uses XenoMouse technology to genetically engineer mice to develop antibody therapeutics for such disease targets as inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, cancer, and transplant-related conditions. Working with partner Amgen, the company is developing ABX-EGF or panitumumab, which could treat non-small cell lung cancer, as well as kidney, colorectal, and other cancers. The FDA has granted the drug fast-track status. Another drug candidate in the biotechnology firm's pipeline targets secondary hyperparathyroidism. Companies such as CuraGen, Chiron, Human Genome Sciences, and Pfizer license technology from Abgenix. Amgen plans to acquire the company.
