Many Americans who smoke end up flicking the butt of this company's premium product when they're done. Philip Morris USA, a subsidiary of cigarette giant Altria Group, is the #1 cigarette maker in the US and controls half the nation's cigarette market. Its Marlboro brand, alone, accounts for about 40% of cigarette retail sales in the country. Its 15 other brands include Virginia Slims and Parliament, as well as discount brand Basic. Like others in the industry, Philip Morris faces rising state and federal excise taxes that continue to boost the cost of lighting up. Rising prices have some smokers turning away from their name brands in favor of discount smokes.
