We don't need no stinkin' transfusions! Biopure eliminates that need through its products, dubbed oxygen therapeutics, which are designed to deliver oxygen to cells via the bloodstream. Its Hemopure, for humans, and FDA-approved Oxyglobin, for dogs, release more oxygen to tissues than a blood transfusion, due to the fact that the molecules are 1,000 times smaller than red blood cells, the normal carriers of oxygen. The products are made of purified and processed cow blood, can be stored at room temperature for three years, and do not require blood typing. After struggling with regulatory approvals, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-2009.
