Anthracite Capital doesn't invest in coal mines, but it does hope its real estate investments will turn into gold. The real estate investment trust (REIT) acquires pools of performing, non-investment-grade commercial mortgage loans and issues debt secured by commercial mortgage-backed securities in the US and international markets. It also makes direct investments in commercial real estate and provides mezzanine loan financing for commercial real estate transactions, generally partnering with fund manager Carbon Capital (of which it owns approximately 20%). Anthracite is externally managed by investment management firm BlackRock.
