Outdoor gear and clothing from Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) outfits everyone from mountain climbers to mall walkers. It's the nation's largest consumer cooperative, with more than 4.5 million members. Through more than 120 outlets in some 30 states, REI sells high-end gear, clothing, and footwear (including private-label goods) for outdoor activities such as climbing, kayaking, and skiing, as well as for hiking, bicycling, and camping. The company also repairs gear, and it sells merchandise online and through occasional catalogs. Its travel service, REI Adventures, offers trips such as cycling the Alps, sea kayaking Costa Rica, and hiking New Zealand. Climbers Lloyd and Mary Anderson formed REI in 1938.
