Operating in about 130 countries, the conglomerate specializes in global container shipping and related services led by Maersk Line, which transports cargo via a fleet of more than 500 containerships, Damco, which provides freight forwarding and supply chain management services, and APM Terminals, a major container terminal operator. Other activities include marine transportation of crude oil and natural gas (Maersk Tankers), oil and gas exploration and production (Maersk Oil and Gas), and marine towing and salvage (Svitzer). It also owns one of Denmark's largest retail chain store operators Dansk Supermarked.
