Giant Food Stores (aka Giant-Carlisle) operates about 145 supermarkets under the Giant and Martin's Food Markets banners in Pennsylvania, and in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Not to be confused with its Landover, Maryland-based sister company Giant Food, both firms are units of Ahold USA, which operates some 700 supermarkets in the eastern US. Giant Food Stores was founded in 1923 and acquired by Amsterdam-based Royal Ahold in 1981. In 2003 its parent company integrated administrative and other functions at the chain with New York-based TOPS Markets. However, Ahold sold TOPS Markets to the private equity arm of Morgan Stanley in late 2007.
