Stock Building Supply (SBS) has crafted itself into a leading supplier of lumber and building materials to home builders and contractors. SBS operates about 100 building supply stores (down from 200 prior to a stint in bankruptcy) in about a dozen states and Washington, DC. Products include lumber, plywood, sheetrock, tools, and trusses. It also operates commercial flooring and roofing services. Founded in 1922 by B.B. Benson to sell boards and plaster base, it is owned by Los Angeles-based private equity firm The Gores Group. The slimmed down lumber building supplies provider is anxiously awaiting the rebound of the US housing market.
