AMCON Distributing enjoys a healthy meal, but it's not without its vices. It's a wholesale distributor of consumer products, including cigarettes, and a retailer of health and natural foods. AMCON serves some 4,000 convenience stores, supermarkets, and institutional customers in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain regions. It also distributes candy, beverages, groceries, paper products, and health and beauty aids. AMCON also operates about 10 health food stores under the Chamberlin's Market & Cafe and Akin's Natural Foods banners in five states. The firm scrapped plans to sell those stores (operating under unit The Healthy Edge) to director and former chairman William Wright, who owns a 24% stake in AMCON.
