There's big money in spare change, and Coinstar has turned the previously underutilized "fourth wall" area between the cash registers and the door in grocery stores into a profit center. Coinstar's core business is its more than 18,400 coin-counting machines in the US, Canada, and the UK and some 159,000 entertainment services (skill-crane, bulk vending, and kiddie ride) machines across the US and Mexico. Coinstar also operates more than 23,000 point-of-sale terminals in the US and the UK, and offers money transfer services at 38,000 locations. In 2008 Coinstar added some 14,000 self-service DVD rental machines to its repertoire.
